Say Twat?

Sorry Americans, for the seemingly offensive language. But, unilke the US where 'twat' is a fairly offensive word (at least to my ears...), it's tossed around here much like 'jackass' would be back home.  In addition to twat, there's also 'twatted'-usually used in reference to being drunk-but that seems to be used less frequently than twat.

Sadly, I think I've now picked up this word, and though I don't use it with every passing breath, familarity breeds comfort; I've found myself uttering it on more than one occasion-usually when dealing with Joe Q. Public while out and about.

Note to self:  this is one British-ism that should *not* make it's way back to the states with me!

  1. Actually twat is a very offensive word in Britain too. It's on a level with 'the c-word'.... it may be becoming commonplace in London from what you're observing, but to be on the safe side, I wouldn't use it outside London (or a big city) :)

    1. I disagree, twat is not that offensive and definitely not on the same level as c*nt, I come from a small English town and it's used very liberally.

    2. I agree, twat isn't that offensive in britain anymore I reckon. Not as offensive as c*nt anyway. It's mostly used in a more comical form of insult. The word twatted was used in eastenders years ago and no one complained to my knowledge. Just another swear word watered down by it being over used.

  3. First commenter has no clue. Twat is in no way on a level with cunt and is definitely widespread.

As an aside, however, I'd recommend Americans refrain from using the word twat over here anyway. Frankly, your accent makes it sound ridiculous, and is more likely to raise laughter than offense.

  5. Completely agree with the last two posts. I'd put 'twat' on the same level as 'asshole' (no pun intended) or 'prick'; it certainly isn't as bad as 'cunt'. The word 'twat' is pronounced with a long 'a' sound. Listen to the guy named TinyEric on this link for the proper pronunciation of the word. The user aaronplane is an example of how most Americans pronounce it incorrectly. http://www.forvo.com/word/twat/

  7. I'm from England and thanks to the Sopranos I now prefer the comical mispronunciation of 'Twot'.
